Machining Magnesium

Magnesium is the lightest structural metal and exhibits excellent machinability. Some of the advantages of machining magnesium compared to other commonly used metals include:

• Low power required – approximately 55% of that required for Al.

• Fast machining – employing the use of high cutting speeds, large feed rates and greater depths of cut. •

Excellent surface finish – extremely fine & smooth surface achieved. • Well broken chips – due to the free-cutting qualities of magnesium.

• Reduced tool wear – leading to increased tool life. To fully exploit and enjoy the advantages of machining magnesium, it is important that the unique characteristics of the metal are understood.

Melmag® Battery Plate and Strip

Luxfer Mel Technologies produce a range of magnesium alloys to meet all seawater battery applications. These include the traditional commercial materials AZ31 and AZ61, as well as the high power speciality magnesium alloys developed by Luxfer Mel Technologies such as MELMAG® AP65,MELMAG® 75 and MELMAG® AT61. AZ31 and AZ61 are the industry standard alloys which are more economical to produce, available in a more extensive range of sizes and offer good all round properties. MELMAG® AP65, 75, and AT61 are high performance alloys which are more electrochemically reactive and generate much higher cell voltages. This results in rapid activation and short voltage transience on switching between loads, making them more suitable for the high demands required for military applications.

AZ80A Extruded Magnesium Alloy

AZ80A is a high-performance, low-density wrought magnesium base alloy composed of aluminium, zinc, and manganese. With a density approximately 30% less than similar aluminium alloys, AZ80A offers significant weight savings for designers. It is specifically engineered for use as CNC machining bar stock, available in various shapes including round, square, rectangular, and custom solid configurations

Zirconia-based materials for catalytic conversions

Luxfer MEL Technologies supplies both doped and undoped zirconium compounds (hydroxides and oxides) for use in a wide range of catalytic applications. Materials are solid powders, with tunable properties resulting from our proprietary manufacturing processes. These are carried out atmulti-ton scale. LMT also supplies zirconium solutions that are frequently used as binders (or indeed a Zr-source) in catalyst forming.

Support item:

Zirconium Oxychloride

Zirconium Oxychloride is a strongly acidic, slightly yellow, clear aqueous solution. Naturally occurring temperature extremes have little or no effect on this product. Any precipitate that might form due to exposure to extreme cold will in most cases readily re-dissolve with agitation.

Support item:

MELcat® Chemcat Datasheet

Luxfer MEL Technologies supplies both doped and undoped zirconium compounds (hydroxides and oxides) for a use in a wide range of catalytic applications.

Support item:

Zirmel® Series

Zirmel® Series of products consist of a clear, aqueous alkaline solution of stabilized potassium zirconium carbonate, offering all the benefits of Bacote, and available in multiple concentrations.
