Luxfer MEL Technologies is the world leader in the development and supply of highly functional magnesium alloys. SoluMag® ND80 is a lightweight, high strength non-dissolving, dissolution resistant magnesium alloy that provides an excellent balance of strength and dissolution performance while being cost effective. Component designs in SoluMag®ND80 can be 20% to 30% lighter than a corresponding aluminum design. The properties of SoluMag® ND80 are well suited for its use as feedstock material from which to machine downhole components. This lightweight alloy is available as extruded rods, bars, and tubes to produce components in demanding downhole environments.

SoluMag® Freshwater is specifically designed to dissolve in very low chloride environments. This lightweight alloy is available as spheres, extruded rods, bars, tubes and profiles to produce components that require strength and ductility in demanding environments as well as a controlled dissolution rate that will effectively dissolve the component in a known time. SoluMag® Freshwater offers significant advantages over other dissolving materials in that it retains super-dissolving properties in conditions where other dissolvables would not function.

SoluMag® HD™ is a highly ductile magnesium alloy that has a high dissolution rate in aqueous chloride environments. This lightweight alloy is available as extruded tube, rods, bars and profiles. SoluMag® HD™ offers a new solution to downhole problems, having superior ductility to conventional dissolvable magnesium alloys as well as a well-controlled dissolution rate.

Luxfer MEL Technologies high purity monoclinic zirconias are high performance, high purity zirconium oxides suitable for use in a variety of applications where a high level of control of chemical and physical properties is needed.

Direct chill cast billet is manufactured by Luxfer MEL Technologies as the starting material for other magnesium products, such as sheet, forgings and extrusions. However, it has been frequently found that the cast billet is suitable for machining into prototypes, thus avoiding expensive tooling, and in some cases for production where the size of the finished item is outside economic casting or extrusion dimension or minimum economic production.

These lightweight alloys are used as forging feedstock, as base material from which to machine components or as custom shapes to integrate directly into a component. Luxfer MEL Technologies operates two dedicated presses to supply a full range of extruded magnesium alloys and we continue to develop new alloys for future applications.

Elektron® Rotamag® is a wrought magnesium base alloy containing aluminium, zinc and manganese. Increased strength is obtained by artificial aging from the as-fabricated form.

Elektron® 43 is a light, high strength wrought magnesium alloy for use at temperatures up to 250˚C. Designs in Elektron® 43 can be 20% to 30% lighter than a corresponding aluminium design. Elektron® 43 is available as rolled plate, forging feedstock and extruded bar, section and profile. Elektron® 43 is an optimised wrought evolution of the original casting alloy, Elektron® WE43.

Elektron WE43B is a high strength magnesium based casting alloy developed and patented by Luxfer MEL Technologies for use at temperatures up to 300˚C. This alloy system maintains its good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, without the use of either silver or thorium. The alloy is stable for long term exposure up to 250˚C. Elektron WE43B has excellent corrosion resistance characteristics.

Elektron® RZ5 is a well proven magnesium casting alloy containing zinc, rare earths and zirconium. Used in the T5 condition, this high strength magnesium alloy is ideal for high integrity castings operating at ambient temperatures or up to 150˚C. In addition to displaying excellent casting characteristics, the alloy is both pressure tight and weldable.
