Lightweight and Corrosion Resistant Materials for Aerospace 

Luxfer MEL Technologies provide unique materials technology enabling lighter and stronger designs for magnesium alloys in aerospace, in safety-critical applications. From thermal barrier protection to lightweight structural materials; the aerospace industry has long recognized the benefits of our high-performance magnesium alloy products.

The benefits of high-performance aerospace magnesium alloys include reducing weight in fuselage structures, interior appliances and aero engine frames. Highly machinable, versatile magnesium alloys are also used in manufacturing gearboxes, covers and components, helicopter transmissions, electronic housings, flight control systems and aircraft wheels, to maximise fuel efficiency, additionally to take advantage of extruded magnesium durability.

For these and other applications in both commercial and military aircraft, demand is rising for advanced higher-performance, high-temperature Elektron® magnesium alloys that are also corrosion-resistant and ignition-resistant.

Materials for Aircraft Engines

Luxfer MEL Technologies alloys are used on aircraft engines from producers, including GE, Honeywell, Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney. Our Elektron® 21, and Elektron® WE43, are also found in transmissions and structures on jet engines.

Materials for Aircraft Drive Train

Elektron® 21 alloys are the materials of choice for transmission housings of many commercial and military helicopters, including models made by Boeing, Sikorsky, Bell, MD Helicopters, Airbus and Leonardo.

Magnesium Alloy Products for Aerospace Applications

Elektron® 21

For use at temperatures up to 200˚C, this alloy has excellent corrosion resistance characteristics and castability, making it the suitable material for a range of aerospace applications.

Elektron® 21 DC

A high-performance magnesium alloy specifically developed for demanding aerospace applications, designed to provide superior mechanical properties and improved corrosion resistance.

Elektron® RZ5

 A proven magnesium casting alloy containing zinc, rare earths and zirconium. Used in the T5 condition, this high strength magnesium alloy is ideal for high integrity castings operating at ambient temperatures of up to 150˚C.

Elektron® WE43B

A high strength magnesium based casting alloy developed and patented by Luxfer MEL Technologies for use at temperatures up to 300˚C. The alloy is stable for long term exposure up to 250˚C.
