Green energy
We are a leading manufacturer of zirconium oxides and doped zirconium oxides for the green energy market, allowing our partners to achieve their net-zero contributions.
Properties
Hydrophilicity
Allows for good surface contact with the electrolyte. Zirconia also has excellent surface wettability, which is important in electrochemical reactions, such as the production of green hydrogen in alkaline water electrolysis.
Particle size
Allows for efficient packing to achieve a desired density and volume in membranes and electrodes. Using our skilled team of chemists, Luxfer MEL Technologies can work towards a desired specification, depending on your electrolyzer applications.
Chemical stability
Conditions of most alkaline electrolysers are hostile, typically operating under a solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide. ZrO2 has excellent performance in these conditions and increase the lifetime of electrolyte cells.
Purity and consistency
Impurities are highly controlled for iron content and other unwanted elements and compounds that could be harmful for your application.
Thermal stability
In solid oxide fuel cell applications materials are exposed to high temperatures, typically reaching 500ËšC to 1000ËšC. Yttria-stabilized zirconia provides excellent thermal resistance and physical stability.
Mechanical stability
Zirconia can function as an effective filler material for membrane components.
Applications
Alkaline water electrolysis cells
A mature technology critical in the green hydrogen value chain – zirconium oxide is a functional component of membranes in this electrolyzer type. Our materials provide structural and chemical stability amongst other key requirements.
Solid oxide cells
This is another key piece of green technology, critical for reaching net-zero goals. Although not as mature as AWE this high temperature fuel cell/electrolyzer can be used as a mode of generating green hydrogen or renewable energy. You will find Luxfer MEL Technologies materials in the solid electrolyte and fuel electrodes, making significant contributions to the green hydrogen landscape.
Proton exchange membranes (PEM)
The chemical and mechanical stability of zirconia materials, as well as their ability to function as effective catalysts/supports enables them to be considered for membrane filler and PGM support (electrode) applications in PEM systems.
Lithium-ion batteries
Solid State battery is a technology type for the longer-term. This battery type operates off a solid electrolyte, as opposed to a liquid electrolyte – designed to take you further with reduced charging times and enhanced safety. Lithium lanthanum zirconium oxides (LLZOs) are common electrolyte materials used in solid state batteries, with a key component being zirconium oxide.
Cathode particle coatings
Zirconia-based compounds could improve the stability and longevity of cathode materials in the application.
