Company History

1935

F.A. Hughes, ICI, and I.G. Farbenindustrie sign agreements and establish Magnesium Elektron Limited. The company begins smelting Magnesium and producing Elektron Magnesium alloys (Elektronmetall).

1940

A new class of Magnesium alloys is developed based on the addition of Zirconium in the form of fluoride salts. Through this work, in the late 1940s, the Zirconium chemicals organisation emerged.

1970-1990

Magnesium Elektron Ltd acquired manufacturing assets at Flemington, New Jersey, USA and began producing Zirconium chemicals. Magnesium Elektron acquires several magnesium powder manufacturers in North America.

1996

Became wholly owned by the Luxfer Group.

2008

ISO 14001 certification achieved. Our Flemington site MEI became known as MEL Chemicals Inc.

2017

Magnesium Elektron rebranded to Luxfer MEL Technologies.

2022

The Elektron Powder business units in the US integrated with the Luxfer MEL Technologies organisation.
