Zirconium – Research and development
At Luxfer MEL Technologies we pride ourselves in being one of the leading experts in zirconium chemistry. With over 70 years of industry experience, we have developed a wide range of manufacturing processes and product knowledge that enables us to support our customers with targeted solutions that are right for them.
Our team of experienced chemists, in combination with a robust new product development process, are ready to listen to your requirements and understand the specific market you operate in. Backed up by an extensive suite of in-house characterization facilities and a strong focus on intellectual property landscapes, we are perfectly placed to fast track your development process. We believe that manufacturing reliability is built by using iterative processes starting from lab scale, through pilot demonstration and ultimately main plant production. Having a fully representative facility at pilot scale enables us to derisk the transition of innovative ideas to commercial reality.

A few custom-tailored product characteristics include:
Particle size
We employ different approaches to tailor particle size to customer demands. This includes precipitation, de-agglomeration or re-agglomeration.
Surface area
Over the years we have developed multiple platforms that allow us to manufacture materials with a range of surface areas and porosities to suit the demands of any catalytic or ceramic application.
Composition
We have extended expertise in controlling not only the impurity profiles of our materials but also doping with a wide range of elements to introduce specific functionality.
Joint research and development
Over the years we have developed close collaborations not only with our customers but also with research institutions and universities. As well as contributing to the advancement of research, this has allowed us to make bespoke developments with intrinsic understanding. By maintaining this network, we continue to support the advancement of science and technology while enriching the knowledge of zirconium’s role in day-to-day applications that reach as many people as possible.
